Member FAQ
What do I need to know about tabling?
- We are asking all members this year to please table at least 1 hour for each awareness week/promotion week. We have had a lack of volunteers in the past and everything runs much more smoothly with more people present. If you are unable to table because you're sick or too busy, please send an email or let an executive know.
- We won't make you table alone until you're comfortable doing so! There will be an executive with you to help you out.
- There will always be a Doodle for tabling sent to your email and on the Facebook group. Be sure to fill it out for people to know who is tabling and for us to track your volunteer hours. If you didn't show up to tabling or can't make it, please let an Exec know either through Facebook or email. You can also make changes on the Doodle.
- Materials for tabling are located in the large black cabinet in SJC (TH252A, beside Scotia Bank).
- This includes the large poster board and a blue bag.
- We also are using tablecloths this year from BUSU where you can sign one out at the BUSU Office.
- It's preferable if people only take free stuff (pins, stress balls, etc) during tabling once they have listened to what we have to say or if they participate in some way. Everyone can take pamphlets, business cards, flyers, etc.
What do I need to know about meetings?
- You can find the meeting time(s) and location(s) on the About Us page.
- We will have a mix of traditional and fun meetings. We recommend attending as many meetings as possible to stay in the loop, get to know each other, participate in fun activities, and learn more about mental health.
- If you miss a meeting or want to go over what was talked about, minutes will be posted on Facebook and ExperienceBU.
- Feel free to take your own notes as well if this helps you out.
- Please check Facebook, ExperienceBU and/or your Brock email regularly for any changes or cancellations that may occur.
How and when can I buy a shirt?
- Shirts can be bought at any time, just let us know your size and that you're interested by sending an email or telling the President. We will give it to you the next time we see you, so most likely within a week! They cost $20 each.
How can I help during events?
- Please wear your Active Minds shirt during events. If you have yet to purchase a shirt we ask that you try to wear green.
- Keep up-to-date on Facebook and your emails for details about the event. This includes a Doodle to fill out how many hours you can volunteer for. The easiest way to keep up with everything is to attend meetings!
- If roles aren't given out before the event, when we meet up a role will be assigned to you. If you have a preference, let us know and we'll do our best to accommodate you. Some things you may do are greeting guests, directing guests, setting up, tabling, etc.
What if I don't know that much about mental health?
- No need to worry! Search through this website and pay special attention to the Resources page and the various quizzes we have. Also, by attending meetings and participating in the club you will be able to learn more.
- Looking for a place to start? Check out HeretoHelp's Wellness Modules or CMHA's Understanding Mental Illness.
I'm interested in becoming an executive, How do I apply?
- We will notify all members in the winter term of when to apply to become an executive. You will be notified at meetings, by email, and on Facebook. Specifics will be given at this time.
- Remember that the odds of you attaining a position are greater if you are an active member! This includes attending meetings, tabling, attending events and participating in campaigns and fundraisers.
Can I get volunteer hours for being an active member?
- Yes! We record your volunteer hours throughout the year and will either enter them into Experience Plus at the end of the year or send them to you (again, at the end of the year) to input online.
- Volunteer hours are counted for attending meetings, tabling, volunteering at our events, etc.
- Take a look at ExperienceBU as well. Attending some of our events as well as just being a member can be added to your Campus-Wide Co-Curriculum (CWC).
What will I be doing throughout the year as a member?
- Keep an eye out for the Events & Campaigns page as we add different events and campaigns that we will be holding, promoting and/or participating in throughout the year. You can follow us on social media to be aware of what we will be doing next and how you can participate!
- Weekly meetings will be held that will alternate between traditional and fun. Participating in these meetings is important for not only staying up-to-date but also to get to know each other and enjoy fun activities.
- Tabling is also part of being a member to help get the word out about our club, events and campaigns, to raise mental health awareness, and to direct students to services they can go to. We're always coming up with creative ideas to make tabling more fun!
What am I gaining as a member?
